General Skilled Migration (GSM) visa program is designed to attract migrants who make a significant contribution to the Australian economy and fill positions where no Australian workers are available. This program includes permanent or temporary visas which allow people to live and work in Australia. Some of the most popular visa subclasses are subclass 189 and 190 (Permanent Residency visa) and 491 (Provisional Permanent Residency visa).
Key features of GSM visas:
- Point tested:
- These are the point tested visa subclasses that require a minimum of 65 points on a point table to get invited
- Skillselect:
- The Department of Home Affairs introduced The Australian Skillselect system on 1 July 2012. Skillselect is an online system through which you have to lodge an Expression of Interest (EOI).
- Expression of Interest (EOI)
- EOI is NOT a visa application and doesn’t give you a bridging visa. It only indicates that you would like to be considered for a skilled visa. Once invited to apply for a GSM visa, you must submit your visa within 60 days.
- Nominated Occupation:
- You must have a positive skills assessment in an occupation on the skilled occupation list published by the Department of Home Affairs. https://immi.homeaffairs.gov.au/visas/working-in-australia/skill-occupation-list
- Skilled Occupation list consists of:
- Medium and Long-term Strategic Skills (MLTSSL) List
- Short-term Skilled Occupation (STSOL) List
- Regional Occupation List
General requirements of GSM visas:
- You must be under 45 years of age
